Hannover 1700-RB thaler Dav-6653
This specimen was lot 73569 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. Taler, 1700-RB. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg Ludwig (future George I of Great Britain). PCGS AU-55. A lovely specimen with lustrous argent surfaces enhanced with subtle champagne toning in protected areas throughout. The Wild Man is very detailed and the die engraver exhibits a rather unique way of representing the prodigious hair on the figure. Well-struck and very well-preserved. A very attractive coin worthy of spirited bidding. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Includes ticket from Kuenker." This type was struck 1700-11 and is somewhat scarce (the 1700 is catalogued as Dav-6653 and other dates as Dav-2065). Other thalers for 1700 include Dav-6654 (leaping stallion) and Dav-6655 (St. Andrew reverse), both priced about the same.
