The second specimen was lot 25064 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg. 24 Mariengroschen, 1695. Zellerfeld Mint. Ernst August, as Bishop of Osnabrück. PCGS MS-62. The single finest example for the date at PCGS, and tied with just two others for the finest across all dates for the type, this enchanting specimen yields an alluring appearance with its gunmetal gray surfaces providing the perfect backdrop for an elegant golden-olive tone surrounding the devices. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type, struck 1693-98, was worth two-thirds thaler or one gulden. It is fairly common in circulated condition but expensive choice. Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg and Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle were traded back and forth between brothers until death left only one, who became the elector of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover ("Hannover" for short) and later king of England.
