Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1694 ducat Fr-575

from the Stack's Bowers 2017 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72269

This specimen was lot 72269 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Santa Ana, CA, May 2017), where it sold for $399.50. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg. Ducat, 1694. PCGS Genuine--Damage, EF Details Secure Holder. RARE. Wrinkled flan, pierced." This rare type is noted for 1694 and 1698. Another, similar ducat (Fr-373), but without the ducal cap on the reverse, was struck 1691-98. The Duchy of Brunswick was divided and subdivided in the seventeenth century but was eventually reassembled as the Kingdom of Hannover before being absorbed into Prussia in 1866.
