Künker sale 294, lot 3585

This specimen was lot 3585 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €900 (about US$1,213 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Johann Friedrich, 1665-1679. Dukat 1668, Clausthal. GOLD. Von größter Seltenheit. Gewellt, schön-sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, John Frederick, 1665-79, ducat of 1668, Clausthal mint. Very rare, bent, fine to very fine.)"

Friedberg lumps all the ducats of this ruler into one catalog number while the SCWC separates the issue of 1668 (KM 125, shown here) from the issues of 1673 and 1679 (KM 151). All are rare. Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg and Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle were traded back and forth between brothers until death left only one, who became the elector of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover ("Hannover" for short) and later king of England.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.40 g.

Catalog reference: Welter 1661; Fr-569; KM-125.
