Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1666-LW 1/2 thaler KM-98
This specimen was lot 5634 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €550 (about US$766 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Johann Friedrich, 1665-1679. 1/2 Reichstaler 1666, Clausthal. Ausbeute der Grube St. Andreas. R Attraktive Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 59, Osnabrück 2000, Nr. 1862. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg, John Frederick, 1665-79, half thaler of 1666, Clausthal mint, for the St. Andrew mine. Rare, attractive patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"
Georg Wilhelm was promoted to duke of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle on the death of his brother Christian Ludwig in 1665 and he ruled in Celle until 1705. This type was struck 1666 and 1671 and in klippe form (KM 99) in 1666. A wild man half thaler (KM 100) exists for 1666.
