Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1668 12 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 41348 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. 12 Mariengroschen, 1668. Zellerfeld Mint. Johann Friedrich I. PCGS AU-55. Standard Catalog of World Coins lists KM-136 starting in 1669; Welter begins this design type in 1668. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." Per the SCWC, this type, equal to one-third thaler, was struck 1669-72 and 1675-79. There are also twelve mariengroschen such as KM 122 (without "12") and KM 123 (leaping stallion reverse). Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg and Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle were traded back and forth between brothers until death left only one, who became the elector of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover ("Hannover" for short) and later king of England.
