Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1669 12 mariengroschen KM-136
This specimen was lot 55627 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg. 12 Mariengroschen, 1669. Zellerfeld Mint. Johann Friedrich. PCGS AU-53. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." Johann Friedrich was duke of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1665-79. The twelve mariengroschen was one-third thaler or half a gulden. The SCWC lists three types for the period: KM 122 (wild man reverse without "12") listed for 1668-74, KM 123 (leaping stallion reverse) and KM 136 (wild man reverse with "12") listed for 1671-79. This example dated 1669 and with a "12" is not supposed to exist.
