Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1664-HS thaler Dav-6529
This specimen was lot 2659 in Goldberg sale 91 (Los Angeles, June 2016), where it sold for $376. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg. Taler, 1664-HS NGC EF45. Georg Wilhelm, 1648-1705. Wildman. Reverse: Helmeted arms. Toned. NGC graded EF-45." This type depicting the wild man of the forest is recorded for 1664-66 and is among the common types of the period. Other thalers for 1664 include Dav-6528, -6355 (1½ thaler), -6534 (1¼ thaler), -6535, and -6536. The Duchy of Brunswick was divided and subdivided in the seventeenth century but was eventually reassembled as the Kingdom of Hannover before being absorbed into Prussia in 1866.
