Ponterio sale 168, lot 40528

This specimen was lot 40528 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $13,512. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle. 3 Taler, 1663-HS. Christian Ludwig (1648-65). RARE wildman type. Some surface marks and staining, but better than usually seen. EXTREMELY FINE." This type depicting the wild man of the forest is recorded for 1663 only and the single thaler is among the common types of the period. A similar three thaler (KM 256.2) was issued in 1665; it is also rare. Christian Ludwig was duke in Calenberg 1641-48 and in Celle 1648-65. His younger brother Georg Wilhelm was duke in Calenberg 1648-65 and in Celle 1665-1705. The last brother, Ernst August, was duke in Calenberg 1679-98 and elector of Hannover 1692-98. Ernst August's son George inherited Calenberg and Hannover in 1698, Celle in 1705 and the throne of Great Britain in 1714.
