Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73568
SB1123-73568r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73568 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg & Luneburg (Celle). 1/2 Taler, 1664-HS. Zellerfeld Mint; mm: HS and crossed keys. Georg II Wilhelm. PCGS Genuine--Tooled, EF Details. Note that neither KM nor Welter list this year for the type. Also note that the holder misattributes the Welter reference as the 1/4-Taler counterpart. This lightly circulated coin offers a bold Wild Man on the obverse and well-struck shield detail on the reverse, though some of the coin's legends are somewhat softly struck. The surfaces are a uniform white argent. The noted tooling is relegated to isolated areas of the legends on the obverse and reverse and is not distracting. A very rare issue; attractive and desirable thus. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Includes ticket from Kuenker." The SCWC does not list any half thaler for 1661-65. This type is listed for 1659-60 only and those dates are scarce.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: cf. KM-62; cf. Welter-1598.
