Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1666-HS thaler Dav-6544
This specimen was lot 23990 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Germany. Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg. Johann Friedrich Taler 1666-HS, AU55 NGC, a few minor flan and rim flaws do not detract from the charm of this piece with appealing blue-green highlights." Christian Ludwig was duke in Calenberg 1641-48 and in Celle 1648-65. His younger brother Georg Wilhelm was duke in Calenberg 1648-65 and in Celle 1665-1705. Johann Friedrich, the third brother, was duke in Calenberg 1665-79. The last brother, Ernst August, was duke in Calenberg 1679-98 and elector of Hannover 1692-98. Ernst August's son George inherited Calenberg and Hannover in 1698, Celle in 1705 and the throne of Great Britain in 1714. This type depicting the wild man of the forest is recorded for 1665-67 only and is catalogued for more than other types of the same period. The Duchy of Brunswick was divided and subdivided in the seventeenth century but was eventually reassembled as the Kingdom of Hannover before being absorbed into Prussia in 1866.
