Künker Auction 426, lot 3625

This specimen was lot 3625 in Künker Auction 426 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €280 (about US$397 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-CALENBERG-HANNOVER, AB 1692 KURFÜRSTENTUM HANNOVER Johann Friedrich, 1665-1679. Reichstaler 1667, Clausthal. Hübsche Patina, min. Fassungsspuren, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg, John Frederick, 1665-79, thaler of 1667, Clausthal mint. Handsome patina, traces of mounting, very fine to extremely fine.)"

Christian Ludwig was duke in Calenberg 1641-48 and in Celle 1648-65. His younger brother Georg Wilhelm was duke in Calenberg 1648-65 and in Celle 1665-1705. The last brother, Ernst August, was duke in Calenberg 1679-98 and elector of Hannover 1692-98. Ernst August's son George inherited Calenberg and Hannover in 1698, Celle in 1705 and the throne of Great Britain in 1714. This is one of nine different thalers from this state dated 1667:

  • KM 101/Dav-6557, St. Andrew reverse, quite scarce;
  • KM 102/Dav-6569, bust obverse, very scarce;
  • KM 112/Dav-6545, wild man with "EX DURIS GLORIA", fairly common;
  • KM 113.1/Dav-6546, title as "DUX", struck 1667-70, fairly common;
  • KM 114/Dav-6550, leaping stallion reverse, shown here, fairly common;
  • KM 115/Dav-6551, leaping stallion reverse, fairly common;
  • KM 116, leaping stallion reverse, not priced;
  • KM 82/Dav-6549, leaping stallion in a wreath, fairly common;
  • KM 89/Dav-6544, wild man reverse, struck 1665-67, somewhat scarce.
