This specimen was lot 74637 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenburg. 4 Mariengroschen, 1693. Zellerfeld Mint. Ernst August. PCGS AU-53. Evenly toned and lightly handled, this enticing and original minor presents great charm and undoubtedly stands as a wonderful representative from the series. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1693-97 but is not expensive. It accompanied a six mariengroschen (KM 376), twelve mariengroschen (KM 377), 24 mariengroschen (KM 378), 2/3 thaler (KM 379) and thaler (KM 369, 382, 385, 384, 383). Ernest August's son, Georg, became elector of Hannover and later king of England. The dynasty lost Hannover in the nineteenth century but still rules in Britain.
