Künker sale 400, lot 50

This specimen was lot 50 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,557 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BAYERN, HERZOGTUM, SEIT 1623 KURFÜRSTENTUM, Maximilian I. 1598-1651. 1/2 Reichstaler 1627, München. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Fast Stempelglanz. (Germany, electorate of Bavaria, Maximilian I, 1598-1651, half thaler of 1627, Munich mint. Scarce in this quality, about uncirculated.)"

In 1623, the duke received the electoral dignity heretofore held by his cousin, the count of the Palatinate. The elector issued two half thalers in 1627; KM 223 with circles around the arms and the Madonna, and KM 224, shown here, without. The KM 223 was struck 1627 only but this type was also struck in 1638. This one is scarce while KM 223 is rare. The reverse motto, "CLYPEVS OMNIBVS IN TE SPERANTIBVS", translates as, "The shield of everyone who hope in you".

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 14.36 g.

Catalog reference: KM 224 (formerly KM 49), Hahn 104.
