Künker sale 335, lot 4197

This specimen was lot 4197 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €14,000 (about US$18,320 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PFALZ, PFALZ, KURFÜRSTENTUM. Maximilian I. von Bayern, 1623-1648. Reichstaler 1626, Heidelberg, mit Titel Ferdinands II. MAXI : D : G : COM · P · RH · V - BA · DVX : S · R · I · AR : ET · EL Gekröntes vierfeldiges Wappen in Verzierung, auf dem Mittelschild Reichsapfel, unten die Kette des Ordens vom Goldenen Vlies und die geteilte Jahreszahl 16 - 26//FERDINAND : II · D : G : ROM : IMPER : SEMP : AVGV : Gekrönter Doppeladler. In dieser Erhaltung von größter Seltenheit. Prachtexemplar. Winz. Belagrest, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Germany, electorate of the Palatinate, Maximilian of Bavaria, 1623-48, thaler of 1626, Heidelberg mint, in the name of Ferdiand II. Obverse: crowned, quartered arms in cartouche, imperial orb in the center, Order of the Golden Fleece around, date below; reverse: crowned imperial eagle. Very rare in this condition, cabinet piece, light deposits, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This scarce type has been variously attributed to Bavaria and the Palatinate and it is currently under Bavaria. It was struck 1624 and 1626 and was accompanied by a double thaler (Dav-A6090).
