Bavaria 1638 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 3442 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €1,000 (about US$1,309 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BAYERN, HERZOGTUM, SEIT 1623 KURFÜRSTENTUM, SEIT 1806 KÖNIGREICH: Maximilian I. 1598-1651. 1/2 Reichstaler 1638, München. R Vorzüglich. (Germany, electorate of Bavaria, Maximilian I, 1598-1651, half thaler of 1638, Munich mint. Scarce, extremely fine.)"
Maximilian I was the first duke of Bavaria to hold the electoral dignity. This type is rare. The reverse motto, "CLYPEVS OMNIBVS IN TE SPERANTIBVS", translates as, "The shield of everyone who hope in you".
