Sincona sale 91, lot 3056

This specimen was lot 3056 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 1,100 CHF (about US$1,454 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Basel, Stadt und Kanton, Dicken 1623, Basel. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Fast vorzüglich. Exemplar der Slg. Zuberbühler, Auktion SINCONA 16, Zürich, Oktober 2013, Los 5145. (Switzerland, canton of Basel, dicken of 1623, Basel mint. Rare in this condition, About extremely fine.)"

The dicken, introduced in the late fifteenth century as competition for the Italian testone, varied in value and weight. By the seventeenth century it had settled down to a humble 24 kreuzer coin. This type was struck 1623 and 1632-36. It was accompanied by a twelve kreuzer or half dicken (KM 81).
