Sincona sale 77, lot 2938

This specimen was lot 2938 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 600 CHF (about US$728 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA. Ferdinand I. 1835-1848. Gulden 1848 A, Wien. NGC MS64+. Prachtvolle Erhaltung. (empire of Austria, Ferdinand I, 1835-48, gulden of 1848, Vienna mint. Uncirculated, Magnificent condition.)"

We don't think this is a gulden, a denomination not introduced until 1857, but a half thaler, of a type struck for Ferdinand 1837-48. Half thalers were also struck for the new emperor Franz Josef in 1848 (KM 2227).

Recorded mintage: 3,964, a better date.

Specification: 14.03 g, 0.833 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 2165, Herinek 164.
