Austria 1848-A 4 ducat Fr-480
This specimen was lot 1837 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 2,400 CHF (about US$2,878 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Ferdinand I. 1835-1848 4 Dukaten 1848. Wien. Vorzüglich. Winz. Kratzer. (empire of Austria, Ferdinand I, 1835-48, quadruple ducat of 1848, Vienna mint. Extremely fine. Minor scratches.)"
This type was struck 1835-48 and is common for this denomination. Emperor Ferdinand was severely epileptic and considered unfit to rule. He was readily persuaded to abdicate during the revolution of 1848. Quadruple ducats were struck in various types for Ferdinand and Francis Joseph for the rest of the century. The second specimen was lot 2336 in Künker sale 439 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €15,000 (about US$20,636 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"KAISERREICH ÖSTERREICH, Ferdinand I., 1835-1848. 4 Dukaten 1848 A, Wien. 13,76 g Feingold. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung MS 63 PL (5784194-010). GOLD. R Von polierten Stempeln. Min.
