This specimen was lot 33339 in Heritage sale 3114 (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $9,600. The lot description[1] noted, "Austria. Franz Joseph I "Convention" Taler 1848-A MS64 NGC, Vienna mint, Bust Left. A rare commemorative issue created with dates between 1848 and 1851, but all were struck in 1852 to commemorate the first dates of ruling for Franz Joseph. These were not intended for circulation, rather distributed to prominent collectors, dignitaries, heads of state, etc. The mintages are unknown but they are certainly small, as any of the aforementioned dated examples appear at auction only sparingly. This slightly reflective example, bursting with vibrant mint splendor, would make for an incredible type example, or for the Austrian specialist looking to the fill this date for their collection." Thalers (KM 2240) were also struck in 1848 for emperor Ferdinand, who abdicated that year in the midst of revolution. This example varies from KM 2242 in the reverse legend, which reads "LOMB·ET VEN·" on KM 2242 instead of "LOMB·ET·VEN·DALM·", as here.

Recorded mintage: est. 50 plus 119,000 of KM 2240.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 2241, Dav-15.
