Sincona sale 43, lot 2734

This specimen was lot 2734 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it sold for 5,250 CHF (about US$6,265 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Franz Joseph I. 1848-1916 Gulden 1848 A. Wien Kopf nach links. Sehr selten. Fast FDC. Prachtvolle Erhaltung mit herrlicher Patina. Kleine Kratzer. (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, gulden of 1848, Vienna mint, head left. Very rare, About uncirculated. Beautiful condition with magnificent patina, Small scratches.)"

This rare type of 1848-51 may have been merely a pattern, similar to the equally scarce thaler (Dav-15).

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 14.03 g, 0.833 fine silver, 30.5 mm diameter, the second specimen 14.02 g.
