This specimen was lot 2735 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it sold for 4,500 CHF (about US$5,370 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Franz Joseph I. 1848-1916 Gulden 1849 A. Wien Kopf nach links. Sehr selten. Fast vorzüglich. (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, gulden of 1849, Vienna mint, head left. About Very rare, extremely fine.)"
This rare type of 1848-51 may have been merely a pattern, similar to the equally scarce thaler (Dav-15).
Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.
Specification: 14.03 g, 0.833 fine silver, 30.5 mm diameter, the second specimen 14.00 g.
