Künker sale 406, lot 3894

This specimen was lot 3894 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,600 (about US$2,099 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KAISERREICH ÖSTERREICH, Franz Josef I. 1848-1916. Dukat 1848/1898, A, Wien, auf das 50jährige Regierungsjubiläum. 3,44 g Feingold. GOLD. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Auktion Aurea Numismatika 61, Prag 2015, Nr. 76. (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, ducat of 1848, struck in Vienna in 1898 for the golden jubilee of his reign. Extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

Altho this coin is dated 1848, no ducats were actually minted for Francis Joseph that year (ducats (KM 2262) exist for Ferdinand, who abdicated in 1848). These were made in 1898 and backdated for the golden jubilee of Franz Josef's reign.

Recorded mintage: 27,000 plus more struck for Ferdinand.
