Sincona sale 57, lot 2929

This specimen was lot 2929 in Sincona sale 57 (Zürich, May 2019), where it sold for 1,000 CHF (about US$1,190 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"I. Kaiserreich. Napoleon I. 1804-1815. 5 Francs An 14 W (1805/1806), Lille. Selten. Nur 13836 Exemplare geprägt. Attraktives sehr schön. (France, first empire, Napoleon I, 1804-15, five francs of the year 14, Lille mint. Rare. Only 13836 pieces struck, Attractive very fine.)"

This is a somewhat common type struck two years only. The various designs of Napoleonic five francs form eight distinct types of which this is the third, struck 1804-06 (AN 13-14) with a complete set of this type comprising 27 date and mintmark combinations, some very rare. All silver five francs were officially recalled in 1928 but ceased to circulate after World War I. This coin was legal tender in the United States until 1857 at a value of 93 cents.

Recorded mintage: 13,812, with four known to exist[2].

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 37 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier. This specimen is 24.67 g.

Catalog reference: F.303/27, KM 662.15, Gadoury 580, Dav-83.
