France 1806-I 5 francs
This specimen was lot 4675 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description [2] noted, "France. 5 Francs, 1806-I (Limoges). Napoleon, Emperor. Bare head. NGC graded AU-50." Shown is a Napoleonic five francs struck at the Limoges mint (mint mark "I") in 1806. It is a scarce date. The Limoges mint struck French coins until 1835. The various designs of Napoleonic five francs form eight distinct types of which this is the fifth, struck 1806-07 with a complete set of this type comprising 23 date and mintmark combinations, some very rare. The type is not difficult to find but is expensive in high grade. All silver five francs were officially recalled in 1928 but ceased to circulate after World War I. This coin was legal tender in the United States until 1857 at a value of 93 cents.
