SB925-71442r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71442 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. Quart de Franc (1/4 Franc), 1806-L. Bayonne Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS AU-50. Though a minor planchet flaw is noted near the rims, this delightful example displays only a slight degree of circulation, with the toning providing a good deal of character. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Ted Uhl at the NEOCC in Cleveland on 21 July 1972 for $35)." This type was struck 1806-07 with eleven different date-mintmark combinations, of which the 1806-A is the only one at all common. In 1806 the French revolutionary calendar was dropped and normal AD dating resumed.
