Stack's Bowers September 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71383

This specimen was lot 71383 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. Franc, 1806-K. Bordeaux Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS VF-20. A VERY RARE and seldom seen type, this specimen, though heavily circulated, remains problem-free and exceptionally appealing. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Mike Geen at the ANA in Baltimore on 20 August 1985 for $50)." This issue, from the Bordeaux mint, is a rare date of a type struck 1806-07 only. A complete set of this type comprises 19 date and mintmark combinations, all rare except the 1806-A and 1806-L. In 1806 the French revolutionary calendar was dropped and normal AD dating resumed.

Specification: 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, 23 mm diameter, decorated edge. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.
