SB925-71012r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71012 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Kingdom. Ecu, 1789-D. Lyon Mint. Louis XVI. PCGS AU-53. The only example of the type observed in the PCGS census, this near-Mint crown from the waning years in the monarchy presents some gunmetal gray hues along with delightful hints of iridescence. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Hornung's in 1975 for $330). Ex: Hornung's Møntauktioner (4/1975) Lot # 619." This specimen is an écu au buste habillé struck at the Perpignan mint, one of a type struck there 1775-91. Its divisions were the half, 1/5, 1/10 and 1/20 écu, struck in modest quantities. The écu was worth $1.10 in the USA before the Civil War. The 1789-D is listed[1] about five times the most common date (1789-A). The known dates include 1775-78, 1782, 1789-91 and most dates of the Lyon mint are rare.

Recorded mintage: 40,060[2].

Specification: silver, 11 deniers (.917 fine), 8.3 pieces to the mark (29.488 g), face value 6 livres, 39 mm diameter. Engraved by Benjamin Duvivier.
