Stack's Bowers 2022 ANA sale, lot 34251
SB822-34251r.jpg

This specimen was lot 34251 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. 2 Escudos, 1808-S CN. Seville Mint. Ferdinand VII. NGC MS-63. Two year type. RARE quality for the type, this armored bust issue of Ferdinand VII present a choice strike atop a quality flan with tremendous brilliance throughout the soft golden surfaces. For the type (1808 and 1809), NGC and PCGS combined have graded only a single example finer, making this piece a perfect candidate for the gold collector who treasures coins in difficult to duplicate quality. From the Avrabanel Collection." This Spanish two escudos was struck at the Seville mint in 1808-09. It is a rare one-year type struck after the abdication of Charles IV. Unlike the Latin American mints which concentrated on eight escudos, the most common Spanish gold coins of the period were the half escudo and two escudos. The mint was moved to Cadiz in 1811 and did not return to Seville until 1815.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.875 fine gold.
