Stack's Bowers 2019 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72776
Spain SB1019-72776r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72776 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $132. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. 2 Maravedis, 1808. Segovia Mint. Charles IV. NGC MS-63 Brown. The sole finest brown example in the NGC census, this choice piece offers a solid strike on its warm surfaces. Wholly pleasing." The Spanish mints feature large issues of a variety of copper coins which did not circulate at all in the Spanish American colonies. In the predecimal system which obtained until 1847, 34 maravedis = one real of silver. This two maravedis was worth 1/136 of a dollar; history does not record the reason for the odd division. This type was struck in Segovia 1788-1808 and was accompanied by copper one, four and eight maravedis. The type is not rare but scarce in nice condition.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: Cayón-13055, KM-426.
