This specimen was lot 75687 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. 2 Escudos, 1808-M FA. Madrid Mint. Charles IV. NGC Genuine--Cleaned, UNC Details. Despite the noted light cleaning, this well-struck and flashy uncirculated example offers abundant reflective luster on its brassy gold surfaces. A few adjustment marks are seen on the obverse and reverse. A very attractive coin." This type was struck at Seville and Madrid (shown here) 1790-1808 and is the most common two escudos of the eighteenth century. Two escudos were struck in metropolitan Spain 1738-1833 in considerable numbers and are quite a bit more common than their counterparts from Latin America, where the two escudos was a rare denomination. Assayer FA is listed for 1808 only. The year 1808 is when Charles IV was tricked into abdicating.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.875 fine gold, .190 troy oz AGW.
