This specimen was lot 850 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $4,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA, Potosí, gold bust 2 escudos, Charles IV, 1808 PJ, rare, NGC AU 55, finest known in NGC census, ex-Norweb, ex-Almenara. Bold strike with full rims, decent luster for the assigned grade, light mark in front of chest, one of only 646 struck for this date (according to Janson). Pedigreed to the Norweb Collection (Spink America auction of March 1997, lot 17) and the Almenara Collection (both stated on label)." This type of 1793-1808 is very scarce as is most colonial gold from Bolivia. In 1808, the king was tricked into abdicating by Napoleon, who maneuvered his brother Joseph onto the throne. The Latin American mints never recognized Joseph, striking coinage in the name of Ferdinand VII instead.
