This specimen was lot 72038 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Santa Ana, CA, May 2017), where it sold for $282. The catalog description[2] noted, "BOLIVIA. 4 Reales, 1808-PJ. NGC EF-45. Weakly struck, nice even toning." This is a late example of a type struck 1791-1808 at Potosi, Bolivia (then called Upper Peru). It was replaced in 1816 by the bust of Ferdinand VII. Harris[1] notes that Potosi four reales of Charles IV are the commonest mint, ahead of Mexico City. Recent hoard finds have only increased this number. Assayer PJ is recorded for 1803-24.
Recorded mintage: 102,000.
Specification: 13.53 g, 0.896 fine silver, .390 troy oz ASW.
