Aureo sale 242, lot 289

The first specimen was lot 289 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 755 € (about US$1,172 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Fernando VII (1808-1833). 1808. Guatemala. M. 4 reales. Busto de Carlos IV. Muy bella. Rarísima así. EBC+. (Ferdinand VII, 1808-33, four reales of 1808, bust of Charles IV, Guatemala mint. Very handsome, rare thus, choice extremely fine)."

In 1776, an earthquake demolished Antigua Guatemala (including the mint) and a new city was built some miles away. To mark the move, the mintmark was changed to "NG" ("Nueva Guatemala", still the capital of Guatemala) on all issues of 1777 and after. Assayer "M" is noted for the years 1785-1821. Harris[2] notes that this type is the most common mint for the four reales of the Ferdinand VII bust (the bust is actually of Charles IV, who abdicated in 1808, but Ferdinand's name is used).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.896 fine silver, .390 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-15644, KM 63, Cal. 720.
