The first specimen was lot 309 in Aureo & Calicó sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 210 euro (about US$347 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1808. Sevilla. CN. 8 reales. Primer busto. Bella. Parte de brillo original. Escasa así. EBC. (Eight reales of 1808, Seville mint, first bust. Nice, some luster remaining, very scarce thus, extremely fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 529 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 320 euro (about US$507 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"1808. Sevilla. CN. 8 reales. Busto desnudo. Dos ligerísimas rayitas en anverso. Preciosa pátina. Muy escasa así. EBC/EBC+. (Eight reales of 1808, Seville mint, bare bust. Two tiny scratches on the obverse, beautiful toning, very scarce thus, extremely fine, nearly choice.)"

In 1808, Napoleon, tiring of Portugal's flouting of his Continental System blockading English trade, decided to invade and occupy that country with Spanish aid. After a complicated deception, both Charles IV and his heir Ferdinand found themselves out of a job and a French army occupying Madrid. Many Spaniards rose against the foreign invader and one such group controlled Seville and issued pesos from the mint there. As Ferdinand was in a French prison, an imaginary bust was used in 1808-09. The advance of a French army forced them to retreat to Cadiz. Under the protection of the British navy, a similar coin (KM 455.1) was issued there 1809-10. Most of the Latin American mints issued pesos for both Charles IV and Ferdinand VII in 1808, rejecting the claim of Napoleon's brother Joseph.
