from the Stack's Bowers 2022 NYINC sale, lot 7789
SB122-7789r.jpg

This specimen was lot 7789 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1886-Ho FG. Hermosillo Mint. NGC MS-62. A brightly lustrous coin with bold cartwheel effect, struck on a somewhat porous planchet. A light dusting of almond toning appears on the eagle-side periphery." The Hermosillo mint was originally a state mint used for striking coppers. Production of eight reales did not start until 1861 (other than a few illegal issues in the 1830's) and its output never matched that of the major mints. However, like most issues after 1873, this date is not actually rare.

Recorded mintage: 225,000 (assayers FG and FM).

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-377.9; DP-Ho33.
