Mexico 1846-Go PM real

Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 22057

This specimen was lot 22057 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $780. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Real, 1846-Go PM. Guanajuato Mint. PCGS MS-64 Gold Shield. A dramatically toned near-Gem of the issue that features distinguishable patches of blue, green, orange and red tone on the cap and rays side, whereas the eagle side displays an intermingling of all. As a date, not designated in any reference we're aware of as particularly elusive, however as the only example graded by PCGS or NGC, this anecdotally suggests otherwise. In any event, certainly worthy of admiration as an elite example of the type, and potentially a real sleeper coin that should be coveted by the specialist as well. From the Matthew Orsini Collection." This type was struck at the Guanajuato mint 1826-68 and most dates are common in circulated condition. An overdate, 1846/5, is mentioned in the SCWC.
