Künker sale 293, lot 686

This specimen was lot 686 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €650 (about US$876 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, HERZOGTUM Georg II. 1727-1760. Reichstaler 1729, Clausthal. R Sehr schön. Exemplar der Slg. Dr. Werner Koch, Auktion Dr. Busso Peus Nachf. 273, Frankfurt/Main 1970, Nr. 948. (Germany, electorate of Brunswick-Luneburg, George II, 1727-60, thaler of 1729, Clausthal mint. Scarce, very fine.)"

This bust thaler of 1727-29 is quite a bit scarcer than the "St. Andrew" thaler (Dav-2088) and the "wild man" thaler (Dav-2091) of the same year. The similar bust thaler of 1730-48 (Dav-2095) is rare.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Welter 2546; Dav-2093, KM 189.
