Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 51318

This specimen was lot 51318 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $8,400. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Enchanting Mint State Tapatio Minor in Gold. MEXICO. 2 Escudos, 1853-Ga JG. Guadalajara Mint. NGC MS-61. A VERY RARE and elusive type, especially in a charming, elevated state of preservation as is the case here, this Mint State specimen yields shimmering surfaces and a vibrant golden-yellow color, with a breathtaking level of originality. Undoubtedly worthy of a supreme bid and intense focus from the specialists within the series." This type is not rare but this is a rare date. Guadalajara struck two escudos 1835-41, 1847-63 and 1870 and is the second commonest mint after Mexico City.
