Mexico 1876-Cn P 25 centavos

This specimen is a very rare date of a series struck 1873-92 at the Culiacan mint, which closed in 1905. Most of the Culiacan issues of 1871-83 are rare; only the 1874, 1879 and 1881/0 are obtainable. This twenty-five centavos piece replaced the two reales struck since colonial times. It, in turn, was replaced by a smaller twenty centavos piece in 1898. This specimen was lot 9061 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $402.50. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Culiacan. 25 Centavos, 1876-CnP. RARE date. VERY FINE."
