Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, part of lot 73139

This specimen was part of lot 73139 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), which sold for $512.40. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Sextet of 2 Reales (6 Pieces), 1833-55. Mexico City Mint. Grade Range: FINE to VERY FINE. 1) 1833/2-Mo MJ. 2) 1836-Mo MF. 3) 1848-Mo GC. 4) 1849-Mo GC. 5) 1852-Mo GC. 6) 1855-Mo GC. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Shown is an 1833-MO MJ 2 reales, one of a type struck at the Mexico City mint 1825-37, 1840-42, 1847-63, 1867-68 with assayer MJ listed for 1833 only. Assayer ML also stamped coins in 1833 but does not seem to have issued two reales. The SCWC lists this as a common date. Other mints include Zacatecas, Guanajuato, Alamos, Hermosillo, Potosi, Culiacan, Chihuahua, Durango, Guadalajara, Estado de Mexico, Real de Catorce and Guadalupe y Calvo. Only Oaxaca did not strike this type. This type, legal tender in the pre Civil War United States for a quarter, is common except in uncirculated.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.903 fine silver, .196 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-374.10.
