Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 72632
SB1122-72632r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72632 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Durango. War of Independence. 8 Reales, 1819-D CG. Durango Mint. Ferdinand VII. PCGS VF-35. Though a characteristically crude strike, this example is well preserved with only moderate wear across the high points and wonderful magenta gray cabinet tone throughout. A very historically significant and tough issue to acquire, particularly in better states of preservation. Doubtless to see spirited bidding from War of Independence specialists." This type was minted in large quantities in Mexico City and branch mints 1811-22. The Durango mint was opened in 1812 by the royalists during the Mexican war of independence and operated until 1895. It struck eight reales with the portrait of Ferdinand VII 1812-22. Many are very crude.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-16009, KM-111.2; Cal-1197.
