Sincona sale 90, lot 1637

This specimen was lot 1637 in Sincona sale 90 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 700 CHF (about US$940 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR / ÖSTERREICH, Ferdinand I. 1835-1848. Dukat 1848 E, Karlsburg. Vorzüglich-FDC. (empire of Austria, Ferdinand I, 1835-48, ducat of 1848, Karlsburg mint. Extremely fine-uncirculated.)"

This type was struck 1837-48 at Vienna ("A"), Kremnitz ("B"), Karlsburg (shown here) and Venice ("V"). The Venice mint issues are rare, the others are all common. Emperor Ferdinand was severely epileptic and considered unfit to rule. He was readily persuaded to abdicate during the revolution of 1848.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.49 g.

Catalog reference: KM 2262, Huszar 2078, Herinek 54, Fr-226 (listed under Hungary).
