Heritage sale 3107, lot 31396
H3107-31396r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31396 in Heritage sale 3107 (Chicago, May 2023), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. Louis XIV gold 2 Louis d'Or 1702-G AU Details (Scratches) NGC, Poitiers mint, Struck over earlier type; flan réformé. Admitting scattered scratches on both facets and light friction high-point friction on the obverse. Nonetheless, a seemingly previously unlisted mint / date combination and highly intriguing as such, demanding serious consideration from French coin connoisseurs." This type, called a double louis d'or aux 8 L et aux insignes was issued 1700-04 on new and "reformed" blanks and like all double louis before the 1740's, is rare. This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here.

Recorded mintage: unknown[2].

Specification: 13.350 g, 0.917 fine gold, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 400 (unlisted date), Fr-435; Dup-1442a; KM-Unlisted date, Gad-Unlisted date.
