Oaxaca 1813 1/2 real KM-221
This specimen was lot 43505 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. War of Independence. Oaxaca. 1/2 Real, 1813. PCGS VF-30 Gold Shield. An obscure and SCARCE type. Unevenly struck as is common for this issue. Nicely toned and quite attractive." After Hidalgo was captured and executed in 1811, José Maria Morelos took over the independence movement until his capture and execution in 1815. His center of operations was in Oaxaca, where copper and silver half, one, two and eight reales were minted 1811-14. Oaxaca was also the scene of royalist issues in 1812. The paucity of bullion meant that silver issues were few.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
