Heritage sale 3064, lot 30767
France H3064-30767r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30767 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis XIV gold 2 Louis d'or 1702-L VF30 NGC, Bayonne mint. A noteworthy example and the only specimen of this date/mintmark combination presently certified by NGC. As the grade suggests, heavy wear has smoothed the central images, but the gently patinated surfaces still produce a glimpse of brightness." This type, called a double louis d'or aux 8 L et aux insignes was issued 1700-04 on new and "reformed" blanks and like all double louis before the 1740's, is rare. This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here.

Recorded mintage: 67,713 fn (no rf recorded), scarce date.

Specification: 13.50 g, 0.917 fine gold, 28-31 mm diameter, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 400, KM 335.9, Gad-261.
