Künker sale 353, lot 4150

This specimen was lot 4150 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €3,800 (about US$5,289 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Wilhelm I. 1861-1888. 1/2 Vereinskrone 1866, A. GOLD. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Erworben am 18.1.1971. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, William I, 1861-88, half union krone of 1866. Extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

In 1855, the friedrichs d'or was dropped in favor of the gold krone. The krone was also minted by Austria, Saxony (KM 1197), Hannover (KM 232), Bavaria (Fr-280) and Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (Fr-750) but does not seem to have been a success, as survivors are few. The krone was dropped in favor of the gold twenty mark after unification in 1871. This half krone was struck 1862-69.

Recorded mintage: 14,338.

Specification: 5.56 g, 0.900 fine gold, this specimen 5.55 g.

Catalog reference: KM 493, Divo/S. 174; Fr-2440; Schl. 650; Olding 435.
