Künker sale 353, lot 4151

This specimen was lot 4151 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €7,500 (about US$10,438 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Wilhelm I. 1861-1888. Vereinskrone 1867, B. GOLD. R Vorzüglich. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, William I, 1861-88, union krone of 1867. Rare, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1861-70 at Berlin ("A") and Hannover ("B"). The krone was also minted by Austria, Saxony (KM 1197), Hannover (KM 232), Bavaria (Fr-280) and Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (Fr-750) but does not seem to have been a success, as survivors are few. The krone was dropped in favor of the gold twenty mark after unification in 1871.

Recorded mintage: 14,954.

Specification: 11.11 g, 0.900 fine gold, this specimen 11.10 g.

Catalog reference: KM 492, Divo/S. 173; Fr-2441; Schl. 645; Olding 436.
