Künker sale 353, lot 4166

The second specimen was lot 4166 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €380 (about US$529 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Wilhelm I. 1861-1888. Vereinstaler 1867, B. Fast vorzüglich. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, William I, 1861-88, union thaler of 1867, about extremely fine.)"

After defeating Austria in the war of 1866, Prussia annexed the kingdom of Hannover and the free city of Frankfurt, among other states. The mints there were converted into branch mints (B = Hannover, C = Frankfurt) and operated 1866-78. This thaler of 1865-71 is the most common type for Prussia and this product of the Hannover mint is a scarce date. After unification, it circulated for three marks.

Recorded mintage: 33,999.

Specification: 18.52 g, 0.900 fine silver, this specimen 18.50 g.

Catalog reference: KM 496, AKS 99; Dav-782; Kahnt 388; Thun 270 B; Olding 411.
