Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71560

This specimen was lot 71560 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 50 Centavos, 1885-Go R. Guanajuato Mint. PCGS AU-55. A deeply toned example with blue and golden hues throughout. Some of the areas of the original surfaces can be observed on both sides. The only certified example by PCGS." This is a common date of a type struck at the Guanajuato mint 1869-87. An 1885/4 overdate is reported but awarded only a slight premium. Assayer RR (shown here as simply 'R') operated 1884-90. This type, tho plentiful in circulated condition, is remarkably scarce in choice grade.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.903 fine silver, .393 troy oz ASW.
